Japan’s public transportation system sustains daily life and regional activities through a diverse, complex network.
Association for Open Data of Public Transportation (ODPT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), is working to make these datasets available to everyone as open data. Past contests collaborated with MLIT's Project LINKS and COMmmmONS initiatives to publish Japan's first demand-responsive transport data, and we enriched barrier-free information via the Pedestrian Space Navigation Project (HokoNavi).
This year, we are further expanding transport data coverage to include regional urban areas and enhancing station layout datasets.
With challenges such as population decline and aging, transportation gaps, over-tourism and accessibility needs, communities across Japan are facing a wide range of mobility issues. That’s why we’re looking for ideas that freely combine public-transport open data to create innovative digital services.
Let's use open public-transport data to make local mobility more convenient, more flexible and more enjoyable. We eagerly await passionate challenges from developers around the world.

What is the Association for Open Data of Public Transportation (ODPT)?
The Association for Open Data of Public Transportation (ODPT) is an industry-government-academia collaborative council primarily composed of public transport operators and ICT companies. Centered on "open data" related to public transportation, the association engages in the development of public transport information services and research and development for standard platforms.
It also operates the "Public Transport Open Data Center," a platform for public transport open data.
What is Project LINKS?
Project LINKS is an interdisciplinary DX promotion project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).
By reconstructing various administrative information that has not been utilized so far as "data" and making it usable, the project aims to promote evidence-based policy making (EBPM) and realize the creation of new businesses (open innovation).
What is COMmmmONS: Regional Transportation Digital Transformation Project?
"COMmmmONS," by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, views regional mobility resources as a shared social infrastructure—or "commons"—accessible to everyone. It is a project designed to eliminate "transportation gaps" by standardizing systems, data, and operational processes, thereby vigorously driving a radical improvement in added value and productivity.
